Presented here is a cassette recording captured on July 28, 2017 in Baltimore, Maryland, in the midst of Alan's first U.S. tour since 2001. Seven veteran improvisers got together to create an hour of sonic subtlety, restraint, and steady, slow burn evolution. It begins with a kind of serene tinkering-- whispering, chirping, softly thrumming guitar work, swelling and ebbing like a tidepool; then the sudden, gentle wash of a drone in major. The witching hour comes, goes, comes again. Stillness descends, then dissipates against the inquiring splash of a cymbal, the driftwood rattle, the small brightnesses of chimed bells. Then the clouds appear; the air slows. The first drops of rain come, and the storm finally crests the horizon. The thunder begins to stutter and roll; the breeze begins to lift again. Before long, all things have converged. The sky meets the sea; the rain meets the sand; the wind blows, utterly sublime, over everything. (-jen)
